The black box ignition—also called the ignition control module or CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition)—is the central electronic component of the ignition system on Johnson Evinrude two-stroke outboard engines. Its mission is to manage the firing of the ignition coils at the precise moment of the combustion cycle, coordinating the signals from the stator and the position sensor to generate the spark in each cylinder with the correct timing. In 115 and 130 hp V4 engines, where the power delivered depends directly on the precision of the ignition in four cylinders working at high speed, this module is critical for the overall performance of the propulsion unit. A failure in the black box causes severe power losses, irregular operation at different rpm, unexpected engine stops or the complete inability to start, leaving the boat without propulsion.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of failure in a CDI module are: engine that starts but shuts down at full throttle, misfire in one or more cylinders ("jerks" or "jerks" at half acceleration), intermittent or absent spark in one or more cylinders verified with a spark tester, and fault codes in the self-diagnosis system when the engine has one. Unlike mechanical wear parts, the black box does not have a replacement interval for fixed hours, but it should be inspected whenever symptoms of irregular ignition appear and at any seasonal inspection after episodes of electrical overcurrent or water in the junction box.
