Description
Function and technical context
The CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) module is the central component of the electronic ignition system in Johnson and Evinrude 25 and 35 hp 3-cylinder outboard engines, manufactured between 1996 and 2001. Its function is to store and discharge electrical energy at the precise moment to the ignition coils, generating the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. Without a properly timed discharge, the engine loses the ability to start or maintain stable combustion, resulting in misfires, loss of performance, and unexpected stops while cruising. Reference 0584823 has been replaced by 0586472 (POWER PACK), the latter being the valid replacement unit to guarantee the correct functioning of the ignition system.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a faulty CDI module include difficult or impossible starting, misfiring in one or more cylinders, irregular engine operation at different speeds and sudden stops without apparent cause. Unlike components with mechanical wear, the CDI module does not have a fixed hourly replacement interval, but it should be inspected if there is any anomaly in the ignition system or when other causes such as spark plugs or coils are ruled out. Replacing the CDI module preventively at the first symptoms prevents being stranded at sea and protects the rest of the electrical components of the ignition system against overloads.
