Function and technical context

The ignition black box – also called the power module or power pack – is the central electronic component of the capacitive ignition system (CDI) in OMC outboard engines, managing the generation and discharge of high voltage pulses that activate the coils and produce the spark in each cylinder. It works in close coordination with the stator, position sensors and ignition coils, acting as the "brain" of the firing sequence. A failure in this module causes a partial or total loss of spark, which results in difficult starting, irregular running, a sudden drop in power or sudden engine stoppage while sailing. The reference REC584030 replaces the OMC references 583777, 584029 and 584030, being compatible with a wide range of Johnson and Evinrude engines of the 88, 90, 100 and 115 hp series, among others.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a defective CDI power module are: the engine starts but stalls intermittently without apparent cause, misfire in one or more cylinders causing abnormal vibration, or complete absence of spark verified after discarding coils and stator in good condition. Unlike mechanical components with fixed replacement intervals, the power pack does not have a scheduled useful life, but it should be inspected each season and replaced if any symptoms of erratic ignition occur, since incorrect firing can also damage the coils and stator. Replacing the module preventively when the first symptoms appear avoids an engine shutdown at sea and the costs associated with a tow or secondary damage to the ignition system.
