Function and technical context

The CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) is the electronic control unit for the ignition system in Suzuki DT40 series outboard engines. Its function is to manage the discharge of energy stored in a capacitor towards the ignition coil at the exact moment of the engine cycle, generating the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. It works within the electronic ignition system without contact points, acting as the "brain" that determines the ignition advance according to the signals received from the magnetic pick-up on the steering wheel. A failure in this unit causes total or partial loss of ignition, difficult starting, unstable idling or sudden engine stoppage, leaving the boat without propulsion.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a CDI failure are: engine that does not start or starts with difficulty without apparent cause in the fuel system, intermittent misfires that worsen with the working temperature, sudden loss of power or cuts in acceleration. Unlike mechanical components, the CDI does not have an hourly preventive replacement interval, but it must be inspected for any anomaly in the ignition that is not resolved by checking the spark plugs, coil or high-tension cables. Replacing the CDI unit at the first symptoms of electronic failure avoids being stranded in the water and rules out breakdowns in the ignition train before intervening on more expensive parts.
