It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each seasonal tune-up and, as a preventive rule, replace them if there is any sign of deterioration without waiting for the leak to become evident. Replacing a thru-hull in the shipyard is always cheaper and safer than facing a leak while sailing.
