Description

Function and technical context

The naval bronze thru-hull is a structural accessory that passes through the hull of the boat to allow the passage of fluids - bilge water, bilge water or deck drainage - from the inside to the outside, guaranteeing the watertightness of the penetration point. It works in the drainage and bilge system, functioning as a critical sealing point between the marine environment and the interior of the boat. With a nominal measurement of 4 inches and a length of 21.00 cm, this short version (v.2) is designed for installations where the thickness of the hull or the available distance does not allow the use of longer models. The naval bronze manufacturing gives it superior resistance to saltwater corrosion, which makes it especially suitable for recreational boats, fishing and professional use in a marine environment. A thru-hull in poor condition or installed incorrectly can compromise the integrity of the hull, with the consequent risk of water entry and sinking.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace a thru-hull are the appearance of moisture or leaks around the bushing, visible corrosion on the brass (verdigris formation, pitting or flaking of the metal), difficulty opening or closing the associated seacock, or movement or play in the installation area. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each seasonal tune-up and, as a preventive rule, replace them if there is any sign of deterioration without waiting for the leak to become evident. Replacing a thru-hull in the shipyard is always cheaper and safer than facing a leak while sailing.
