Description

Function and technical context

The naval bronze thru-hull is the hull accessory responsible for creating a watertight passage between the inside and outside of the boat's hull, allowing the evacuation of gray water, bailing or deck drainage through the transom or hull liner. It works in the boat's drainage and drainage system, constituting, together with the bottom valve or seacock, the critical closing point against the entry of sea water. Made of naval bronze, it offers superior resistance to marine corrosion compared to ferrous materials, being suitable for both saltwater and freshwater installations. Measuring 2 inches and 24 cm long, this scupper thru-hull is sized to pass through bulkheads or hull bottoms of considerable thickness, ensuring a firm and vibration-free fit. A thru-hull in poor condition, with cracks, advanced corrosion or without adequate sealing, can compromise the integrity of the hull and cause water leaks with serious consequences.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace a thru-hull are: presence of persistent moisture or dripping around the installation flange, visible corrosion in the form of pitting or disqualification of the brass (intense greenish discoloration or loss of material), and difficulty in turning or closing the associated bottom valve. It is recommended that all thru-hulls and their sealing gaskets be visually inspected at each docking or seasonal maintenance, and replaced if they show any signs of structural deterioration. Replacing a thru-hull preventively during grounding is a minimal investment compared to the cost and risk of managing a water leak while underway.
