Description

Function and technical context

The naval bronze thru-hull is a hull accessory that allows the controlled passage of water through the hull of the boat, whether for the intake of seawater for cooling systems, bilge evacuation, deck drainage or gray water outlet. It works in the ship's water management system, acting as a watertight connection point between the interior and exterior of the hull. Its manufacture in naval bronze guarantees high resistance to corrosion in marine environments and mechanical robustness superior to plastic materials, being especially valued in permanent installations and medium-high demands. A damaged thru-hull, with cracks in the body or with a defective closure, can compromise the watertightness of the hull and lead to uncontrolled water entry, with the consequent risk for the buoyancy and safety of the boat. This model has a length of 10.00 cm and a nominal diameter of 2", suitable for flow rates typical of bottom intakes and drains for general use in recreational and work boats.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace a thru-hull are the appearance of verdigris, advanced surface corrosion or pitting on the brass body, leaks or persistent moisture around the fitting, and difficulty operating or completely closing the associated stopcock. It is recommended to visually inspect the thru-hull at each docking or seasonal tune-up, checking the state of the sealing, the integrity of the body and the absence of galvanic electrolysis. Replacing the thru-hull preventively in the event of any sign of degradation avoids emergency interventions in the water, which are considerably more costly and dangerous than a planned dry replacement.
