Description

Function and technical context

The stainless steel reinforced nylon thru-hull at a 90° angle and 3/4" diameter is a hydraulic connection element that allows water, cooling or evacuation pipes to be routed through the hull of the boat with an integrated change of direction, eliminating the need for additional elbows. Its bi-material composition—high chemical resistance nylon body and stainless steel fastening elements—makes it especially suitable for installations in saltwater environments, where corrosion is the main enemy of hull accessories. This type of fitting Thru-hulls usually work in seawater intake circuits for engine cooling, in bilge emptying systems or in sanitary water evacuation lines. A thru-hull in poor condition can cause water to enter the hull in an uncontrolled manner, with the risk of flooding that this entails, so its structural integrity is absolutely critical for the safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a thru-hull needs to be replaced are: visible dripping in the area where it joins the hull, fissures or cracking of the nylon body due to prolonged exposure to UV rays or pressure cycles, excessive play in the fixing nut or galvanic corrosion in the metal sealing elements. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the tightness, the condition of the O-rings and the absence of deformations. Replacing a thru-hull preventively in the event of any sign of deterioration is a low-cost measure that can prevent a water leak during navigation, with the serious consequences that this entails.
