Function and technical context

The nylon thru-hull with a 90º outlet and a diameter of 28.5 mm is the connecting element that passes through the hull of the boat to allow the passage of water pipes, bilge hoses, cooling or drainage systems, maintaining the tightness of the hull at the point of penetration. It works mainly on seawater cooling, bilge emptying and wet exhaust systems, where the pipe must change direction immediately as it passes through the hull. The 90º configuration allows the fluid to be redirected parallel to the hull without the need for additional elbows, simplifying installation and reducing potential leak points. A damaged, cracked thru-hull or with the tightening ring in poor condition can cause water to enter the interior of the hull, with serious consequences for the safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the thru-hull needs to be replaced are: presence of moisture or dripping in the hull penetration area, difficulty turning or adjusting the tightening nut, visible cracks in the nylon body, deformations due to prolonged exposure to UV rays or engine heat, and unwanted play or movement in the connection. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each docking or seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the condition of the nylon and the integrity of the seal. Replacing a thru-hull in poor condition during dry maintenance avoids an emergency repair in navigation, where a water leak can compromise the entire voyage.
