Function and technical context

The 1 1/4" plastic thru-hull is a sealing and passage element installed in the hull of the boat, specifically in the drainage or sliding areas (scupper), which allows the controlled evacuation of water accumulated on deck or in the bilge to the outside of the boat. It works in the structural drainage system of the length, acting as an interface between the interior of the hull and the aquatic environment, at the same time guaranteeing the watertight integrity of the hull. Its mounting dimensions - height 97 mm, external diameter of 67.5 mm, internal passage diameter of 41 mm and neck of 32 mm—determine its correct adaptation to the thickness and geometry of the hull where it is installed. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a thru-hull needs to be replaced are: presence of humidity or leaks around the accessory, visible deformations or microcracks in the plastic body, looseness or movement of the assembly with respect to the hull, and corrosion or deterioration of the locknut and sealing. As it is a plastic component subjected to immersion cycles, UV radiation and thermal variations, it is recommended to inspect it visually at each annual beaching, paying special attention to the condition of the thread and the integrity of the material. Replacing a thru-hull in a slipway, in a preventive manner, is incomparably more economical and safer than facing a leak while sailing.
