Description

Function and technical context

The thru-hull is the watertight connection element between the interior of the hull and the outside water, allowing the passage of cooling pipes, bilge evacuation, sea intakes or exhaust systems without compromising the structural integrity of the boat. Made of plastic reinforced with fiberglass (66-30%), it offers superior resistance to marine corrosion and the mechanical stresses of the waterline, surpassing non-reinforced materials in durability in saltwater environments. The exterior trim stamped in AISI 316 stainless steel guarantees a finish resistant to oxidation and pitting even in ocean navigation. With a nominal size of 3/4" and dimensions A=19, B=86, C=33, D=48, E=28 mm, this accessory covers small diameter pipe installations in fiber, wood or aluminum hulls. A thru-hull in poor condition or poorly sealed can lead to uncontrolled water entry, so its correct installation and maintenance is critical for the safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a thru-hull needs to be replaced are the appearance of humidity or persistent drops around the fitting in the bilge, visible cracks in the plastic body, corrosion on the external trim or difficulty in closing the associated seacock due to deformation of the assembly. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each seasonal tune-up, especially after dry wintering where humidity-dry cycles can cause microcracks in the material. Preventively replacing a thru-hull with signs of fatigue avoids emergency situations at sea that could compromise the buoyancy of the boat.
