Function and technical context

The thru-hull with spigot is a hydraulic closure accessory that passes through the hull of the boat to allow the passage of water pipes, bilge systems, seawater cooling or bottom intakes, maintaining the watertightness of the hull at that critical point. Made of white plastic resistant to marine corrosion, it is especially suitable for installations where electrical insulation is required or where metal components could suffer galvanism in contact with salt water. The 1 inch thread and 25 mm outlet allow direct connection with standard hoses of that diameter, facilitating installation in onboard seawater circuits. If the thru-hull shows leaks, cracks or the seal is no longer airtight, water can enter the hull progressively and silently, with serious consequences for the buoyancy and safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a deteriorated thru-hull are the appearance of humidity or small accumulations of water inside the hull without apparent cause, difficulty in opening or closing the bottom cock, or the presence of visible cracks in the plastic body due to temperature cycles, mechanical stress or aging of the material. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the plastic, thread integrity and hose fit. Preventively replacing a thru-hull in poor condition before launching the boat is a low-cost measure that avoids emergency repairs with the boat in the water.
