Description

Function and technical context

The thru-hull with integrated spigot is a critical sealing accessory that allows it to pass through the hull of the boat to make way for seawater pipes, cooling circuits, bilge systems or bottom evacuations, maintaining the watertightness of the hull at all times. The built-in spigot or union facilitates direct connection of the hose without the need for additional fittings, simplifying installation and reducing potential leak points. Made of AISI 316 stainless steel, it offers superior resistance to galvanic corrosion and saline environments compared to brass or AISI 304 stainless steel, being the usual choice in construction applications permanently exposed to water. Poor installation or deterioration of the sealing can cause water to enter the bilge, compromising the buoyancy and safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a deteriorated thru-hull are the appearance of humidity or localized leaks in the area of the hull, visible corrosion on the thread or on the body of the accessory, and difficulty closing the associated seacock or bottom cock. It is recommended to visually inspect the thru-hull at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the state of the seal, the integrity of the thread and the absence of corrosion pits. Preventively replacing a thru-hull with signs of wear prevents an unexpected water leak during navigation, a breakdown that can be extremely costly or dangerous if it occurs far from the port.
