Description

Function and technical context

The 2" brass thru-hull is an essential hull accessory on motor and sailing boats, responsible for allowing the watertight passage of fluids - cooling water, bilge or scupper evacuation - through the hull without compromising the integrity of the waterline. It works integrated into the seawater cooling, cockpit drainage and bilge drainage systems, acting as a transition point between the interior of the boat and the outside. Its function is critical: a thru-hull in poor condition, with advanced corrosion or poor sealing, can cause uncontrolled entry of water that compromises the buoyancy and safety of the crew. The brass used in its manufacture offers high mechanical and anti-corrosion resistance, suitable for installations on site in salt and fresh water environments.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace a brass thru-hull are: presence of verdigris or calcareous deposits on the body of the accessory, visible signs of galvanic corrosion (pinkish discoloration or loss of material in the alloy), microcracks in the threaded body or in the support flange, and any indication of humidity or leakage in the installation area. It is recommended to visually inspect the thru-hull at each docking or seasonal maintenance, as continued exposure to salt water accelerates its degradation. Replacing it preventively at the first sign of deterioration avoids serious navigation breakdowns and hull repairs at a much higher cost.
