Description

Function and technical context

The thru-hull with integrated spigot - also called hull connection or thru-hull with spigot fitting - is the element that allows seawater to pass through the hull of the boat in a sealed manner to convey seawater to the engine cooling circuit or to evacuate bilge water, exhaust cooling or other fluids. Unlike simple thru-hulls, this model incorporates the spigot (male connection) integrally with the threaded body, which eliminates an additional connection and reduces possible leak points below the waterline. Made of chromed brass, it offers superior resistance to corrosion in marine environments compared to untreated brass, being suitable for both fresh and salt water. Its 1/2" thread and 16 mm barb make it compatible with standard hoses of that diameter, facilitating the direct connection of the cooling rubber or any auxiliary hydraulic circuit on board. A thru-hull in poor condition—with leaks, advanced corrosion or cracks—can compromise the buoyancy of the boat, so its correct installation and periodic maintenance are of critical importance for safety.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the thru-hull needs to be checked or replaced are: presence of moisture or dripping in the area of the hull where it is installed, difficulty in maneuvering or closing the associated bottom cock, visible corrosion on the brass body (greenish stains, pitting or deformations) and deterioration or hardening of the hose at the connection point with the barb. It is recommended to visually inspect the thru-hull at each beaching or seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the chrome plating, the integrity of the thread and the absence of microcracks. Replacing this component preventively in the event of any sign of corrosion prevents a leak in navigation, with the safety consequences that this entails.
