Description

Function and technical context

This double female-female connector (manchon F/F) made of AISI 316 stainless steel in size 1" acts as a joining element between two sections of pipe or hose within boat channeling systems, allowing pipes to be extended, repaired or spliced without loss of tightness. Its application covers seawater cooling systems, fuel circuits, bilge lines, sanitary systems and any onboard installation that requires continuity in the routing of 1-inch BSP or NPT threaded pipes. The AISI 316 material, known as marine stainless steel, incorporates molybdenum in its alloy, which gives it a much higher corrosion resistance than AISI 304 in saline environments, being the recommended technical choice for installations permanently exposed to seawater, humidity or saline vapors. A connector in poor condition – cracked, corroded or with a damaged thread – can cause leaks in critical circuits, with the consequences that this implies in navigation: loss of cooling, uncontrolled entry of water or interruption of the fuel supply.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a connector of this type must be replaced are: presence of humidity, dripping or traces of oxidation in the vicinity of the joint, difficulty in tightening or loosening the connection due to deterioration of the threaded thread, and visible deformation of the body of the connector due to impacts or mechanical stress on the pipe. Although AISI 316 stainless steel offers a long service life, it is recommended to visually inspect all connectors and fittings on board during each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to possible corrosion pitting in areas that are difficult to ventilate. Replacing a connector preventively at the slightest sign of deterioration prevents major breakdowns in navigation, where a leak in a closed circuit can be difficult to solve without the appropriate means.
