Description

Function and technical context

This 3/4" threaded male plug in AISI 316 stainless steel is used to permanently or temporarily seal pipes, fittings and threaded holes in hydraulic systems, seawater cooling systems, fuel circuits and evacuation pipes on board. Its main function is to hermetically seal an intake or branch that is out of service, preventing leaks, the entry of salt water or loss of pressure in the circuit. AISI 316 stainless steel – known as “marine steel” due to its high resistance to galvanic corrosion and chlorides – makes it especially suitable for installations in direct contact with seawater, bilge or environments with high salinity and humidity. A deteriorated, cracked or thread-damaged plug can compromise the tightness of the entire system, with consequences ranging from small leaks to flooding of the engine chamber in navigation conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace a threaded male plug are the appearance of moisture or traces of corrosion in the connection area, visible pitting on the body of the plug, leaks through the seat of the thread or difficulty in removing and retightening it without sealing correctly. Since AISI 316 is highly resistant, deterioration usually occurs due to mechanical stress or galvanic pairs with less noble metals; It is advisable to inspect it during each seasonal maintenance and replace it if there is any sign of corrosion or compromised thread. Preventively changing a male plug when the circuit is dismantled for another service is a recommended practice that avoids emergency interventions with the boat in the water.
