Description

Function and technical context

The 2" male plug in AISI 316 stainless steel is a threaded closure element used to seal pipes, fittings and hydraulic connections in marine installations where a hermetic and durable seal is required. It is commonly used in seawater cooling circuits, bilge systems, fuel installations and wet exhaust pipes, acting as a permanent or temporary closure of threaded "T" mouths, manifolds and bottom valves. The choice of AISI stainless steel 316—alloy with molybdenum—is decisive in marine environments: it offers resistance to salt corrosion much higher than that of conventional AISI 304 stainless steel, which guarantees the tightness of the closure over time without degradation due to oxidation. A plug in poor condition or of inappropriate material can cause initially imperceptible leaks that lead to water ingress, contamination of the circuit or loss of pressure in the affected system.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a threaded male plug needs to be replaced are the presence of moisture or traces of corrosion in the tightening area, visible leaks around the thread or difficulty in guaranteeing the correct tightening torque due to wear of the hexagon or deterioration of the thread. During each seasonal maintenance—or whenever work is done on the boat's hydraulic or cooling system—it is advisable to visually inspect the condition of all threaded plugs exposed to seawater or chemicals. Replacing a damaged plug preventively is a minimal cost operation that prevents more serious breakdowns, such as bilge flooding or engine stoppages while sailing.
