Description

Function and technical context

This fiberglass reinforced plastic reducer fitting allows you to connect pipes or hoses of different diameters within the water cooling circuit, wet exhaust circuit or auxiliary systems of a boat, adapting the pitch from 1 inch to 3/4 inch without the need for additional intermediate pieces. Its manufacture of technical plastic reinforced with fiberglass gives it resistance to marine corrosion, high cooling water temperatures and the chemical action of additives and salt water, advantages that conventional metal fittings do not always guarantee in demanding nautical environments. The correct tightness of this reduction is essential to maintain the adequate flow in the circuit: a leak or break at this point can cause a loss of pressure in the cooling system, overheating of the engine or entry of water into unwanted areas of the machinery compartment.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a reducing fitting must be replaced are the appearance of humidity or dripping in the connections, visible microcracks in the body of the fitting, deformations due to heat or excessive tightening, and loss of tightness that results in a drop in cooling temperature or a temperature alarm on the panel. It is recommended to visually inspect all fittings and reductions in the system during each seasonal maintenance, especially after wintering, since freeze-thaw cycles accelerate the appearance of cracks in plastic components. Preventively replacing this type of low-cost part avoids serious breakdowns in the cooling circuit that can lead to costly interventions on the engine or, in the worst case, an emergency stop at sea.
