Description

Function and technical context

This 90º male/female elbow in AISI 316 stainless steel is a pipe accessory designed to redirect the routing of fluid pipes in nautical facilities, allowing precise direction changes at 90 degrees with male thread on one end and female thread on the other. It is commonly used in seawater cooling systems, wet exhaust circuits, bilge installations, fuel systems and onboard fresh water pipes. The choice of AISI 316 stainless steel, known as "marine steel" due to its high resistance to corrosion in saline environments, is decisive in guaranteeing the tightness and durability of the joint: a degraded elbow can cause leaks, unwanted water entry or loss of pressure in the circuit, compromising both the safety of the boat and the correct functioning of the connected systems. Its measurement of 1½" (inch and a half) makes it compatible with standard pipe diameters widely used in medium flow nautical plumbing.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a stainless steel pipe elbow should be inspected or replaced are the presence of moisture or visible dripping in the connection area, surface rust stains or pitting on the body of the elbow, and difficulty maintaining thread tightness due to thread wear. Although AISI 316 offers far superior resistance to 304 stainless steel in marine environments, it is recommended to inspect it during each seasonal maintenance, especially in installations exposed to hot seawater or frequent pressure cycles. Replacing the elbow preventively at the first sign of deterioration avoids more costly breakdowns and unplanned outages at sea.
