Description

Function and technical context

This 90º female/female elbow in AISI 316 stainless steel is a pipe fitting designed to change the direction of fluid at right angles within the plumbing and piping systems of a vessel. It is commonly used in freshwater and saltwater installations, seawater cooling systems, sanitary circuits and bilge lines, where driving must overcome structural obstacles in the hull or engine. AISI 316 stainless steel—an austenitic alloy with molybdenum—offers much higher resistance to marine corrosion than conventional steel or AISI 304, being the recommended technical choice for environments with permanent exposure to salt or brackish water. An elbow in poor condition can cause internal or external leaks, loss of pressure in the circuit, contamination between circuits or, in serious cases, water entering the helmet, with the safety consequences that this implies.

When to replace this part?

The most frequent symptoms of deterioration in a stainless steel threaded elbow are the appearance of surface rust in the threaded areas (indicative of the beginning of corrosion due to cracks or galvanic contact), visible leaks at the junction with the pipe, or microcracks detectable when visually inspecting the curvature of the elbow after prolonged shocks or vibrations. It is recommended that all threaded pipe fittings be inspected at each seasonal maintenance, paying particular attention to tightness and sealing condition. Preventively replacing an elbow at the slightest sign of corrosion or leak avoids more serious and costly breakdowns in navigation, where repair on board is very difficult.
