Function and technical context

This 90º male/female elbow in AISI 316 stainless steel is used in onboard pipe installations to change the direction of the layout at a right angle, both in seawater cooling circuits, wet exhaust systems, fuel lines or any pipe that requires a 90º turn without losing tightness. The AISI 316 stainless steel construction—an austenitic alloy with molybdenum—makes it especially resistant to galvanic corrosion and saline marine environments, surpassing in durability conventional steels or AISI 304 in saltwater applications. The combination of male end and female end with 1" NPT or BSP thread facilitates its direct integration into existing installations without the need for additional adapters, guaranteeing a safe and leak-free connection in the boat's pipe network. An elbow in poor condition or with microcracks can cause internal or external leaks that compromise the flow of the circuit, engine cooling or the safety of the bilge.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a pipe elbow needs to be replaced are the appearance of moisture or rust stains at the joints, persistent drips even after tightening the connection, or visible deformations in the body of the elbow due to impact or material fatigue. Although AISI 316 stainless steel offers a very long useful life, it is recommended to visually inspect this type of fittings during each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the thread areas where corrosion can accumulate due to contact with different metals. Preventively replacing a cracked elbow or one with a damaged thread prevents more serious breakdowns in the pipe installation and possible water ingress into machinery spaces during navigation.
