Thru Hull Scupper Brass 3/8" (Variant)
Description
Function and technical context
The 3/8" brass thru-hull is an essential hull accessory on pleasure and work boats that allows the controlled passage of fluids through the hull, whether for deck drainage, bilge water evacuation or connection of auxiliary seacocks. Made of brass, a material resistant to marine corrosion and with excellent performance in salt and fresh water environments, this component guarantees the tightness of the hull at the point of penetration. Its correct installation is critical for the safety of the boat: a damaged, poorly adjusted thru-hull or with the fitting in poor condition can cause uncontrolled entry of water that compromises the buoyancy of the boat. The 3/8" measurement makes it especially suitable for small diameter drain lines, scuppers or low section auxiliary connections.
When to replace this part?
Symptoms that a brass thru-hull needs to be replaced include: water seepage around the fitting or sealing tube, visible greenish oxidation or galvanic corrosion on the fitting thread or body, and difficulty turning or adjusting the pitch. Brass, although resistant, can suffer dezincification over time in very aggressive waters, weakening the internal structure of the component without it being evident to the naked eye. It is recommended to inspect all thru-hulls at each seasonal docking and preventively replace any part that shows signs of corrosion, deformation or loose fit: a scheduled replacement at the shipyard is always much less expensive than an emergency repair with the boat in the water.
