PVA SPONGE
Description
Function and technical context
The PVA boat sponge is a bailing and drying accessory frequently used on board, made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a highly absorbent synthetic material that allows you to remove water accumulated inside the hull, in the stern well, in the bilge or on any surface that is difficult to reach with conventional cloths. Its absorption capacity is much higher than that of natural sponges, making it especially useful for leaving engine compartments and hard-to-reach areas completely dry after being grounded, washed or water has entered. Keeping the interior of the boat free of moisture is essential to prevent corrosion of metal structures, deterioration of wood and the proliferation of mold in closed areas.
When to replace this part?
The PVA sponge must be checked at the beginning of each nautical season: when it loses elasticity, presents tears, becomes rigid even when wet or no longer recovers its shape after wringing, it has reached the end of its useful life and must be replaced. It is recommended to always have a spare unit on board, as it is a basic maintenance and safety tool whose absence can complicate manual bailing or drying operations after a breakdown. Replacing it preventively at the beginning of the season guarantees that it will be in perfect condition when it is needed most.
