Description

Function and technical context

The 1" brass thru-hull is a structural sealing accessory that passes through the hull of the boat to allow the passage of water, gases or fluids between the inside and outside of the boat without compromising the integrity of the hull. It works in drainage systems, deck drainage, ventilation and bilge evacuation, being a critical element at the waterline and below it. Brass provides excellent resistance to marine corrosion and superior mechanical robustness compared to plastic materials, guaranteeing a safe and durable connection even in high salinity environments. A thru-hull in poor condition or incorrectly installed can cause uncontrolled entry of water into the hull, with serious consequences for the safety of the boat and its crew.

When to replace this part?

Common symptoms indicating the need to replace a brass thru-hull include leaks or moisture around the installation point, visible galvanic corrosion on the thread or body of the part, difficulty turning or adjusting the associated shut-off valve, and warping or cracking in the brass due to mechanical stress or grounding cycles. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each beaching or seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the integrity of the seal with the hull and the condition of the internal locknut. Preventively replacing any thru-hull with signs of advanced corrosion or loss of tightness is an elementary safety measure that prevents serious breakdowns and costly emergency interventions on the water.
