Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential cathodic protection elements in any marine propulsion system exposed to salt or brackish water. This anode, with reference TEN02513, is designed specifically for Arneson Surface Drive transmission systems, where it protects metal parts from galvanic corrosion caused by contact between different metals immersed in an electrolyte such as seawater. Being a more electrochemically active metal, the anode sacrifices itself by corroding in a controlled manner to preserve the structural surfaces of the drive, shaft and transmission components. Without adequate cathodic protection, the metal elements of the Arneson system are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the transmission and lead to serious and costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a sacrificial anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers sufficient protection and galvanic wear begins to transfer to the metal parts of the drive. In salt water environments with high conductivity or in boats that remain moored for long periods, consumption may be faster than usual, so it is recommended to check the condition of all the anodes at the beginning and end of each nautical season. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid replacing Arneson drive system components, which are significantly more expensive to repair.
