Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for Caterpillar Series 3126 engines is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a galvanic element that corrodes in a controlled manner to preserve the noble metal parts of the engine and hull. This component works in the seawater cooling system and on metal surfaces exposed to the marine environment, neutralizing galvanic currents that cause accelerated oxidation and degradation of aluminum, bronze and stainless steel. Its presence is critical in marine diesel engines such as the Caterpillar 3126: without active cathodic protection and in good condition, the heat exchanger housings, water caps and other metal components of the cooling circuit suffer progressive electrolytic corrosion that can lead to serious and costly breakdowns. The reference REC9523 is specifically designed to adapt to the anchoring points of the block and cooling circuit of the Series 3126, guaranteeing an adequate sacrificial surface for the protection of the assembly.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be visually inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to be completely consumed, since a depleted anode leaves the metal parts of the engine without protection against galvanic corrosion. Symptoms of a worn or missing anode manifest themselves as pitting and visible erosion on the cooling circuit covers, on the heat exchanger or on the propeller shaft, as well as rust deposits in the cooling water. It is recommended to replace the anode preventively at each annual maintenance: the cost of an anode is minimal compared to the repair of a heat exchanger or casing damaged by electrolytic corrosion in navigation.
