Function and technical context

The anode kit for Ford engines with cap is part of the boat's galvanic protection system, acting as a sacrificial anode to preserve metal parts submerged or in contact with seawater. Its mission is to attract electrolytic corrosion towards itself, protecting critical components of the engine block, tail or shaft from the destructive action of salt or brackish water. By including a plug, the kit guarantees a correct seal during installation, preventing water from entering the interior of the engine or transmission. Without adequate anodic protection, the noble metals of the propellant – aluminum alloys, bronze or stainless steel – progressively degrade, potentially causing serious and costly structural failures.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass, since below that threshold they stop effectively protecting the metal parts of the transmission and the block. Clear signs that the anode is exhausted are its extremely reduced appearance, its sandy or disintegrated texture, or the appearance of corrosion pits on adjacent pieces of aluminum. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each nautical season, or after prolonged navigation in high salinity waters, is the practice recommended by specialists to avoid irreversible damage to high-cost components.
