This zinc anode for Isoterm water heaters acts as sacrificial cathodic protection within the marine thermos tank, neutralizing galvanic corrosion that destroys the internal metal walls of the heater. Being made of zinc, the anode preferentially corrodes before the boiler components, preserving the integrity of the heat exchanger and heater casing. Its function is especially critical in salt or brackish water environments, where electrochemical activity is more aggressive. Without active cathodic protection and in good condition, the heater tank can suffer punctures and leaks that render the equipment unusable.

When to replace this part?

The Isoterm heater anode should be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass or presents an irregular and severely worn shape. Symptoms of a depleted anode include rust or reddish discoloration in the boat's hot water, as well as visible pitting inside the tank during the annual inspection. Preventive replacement is recommended each season in areas of high salinity or waters with high conductivity, since a consumed anode leaves the heater exposed to rapid and irreversible corrosion that may require changing the entire boiler.
