Description

Function and technical context

This plate anode for Arneson transmission systems acts as a cathodic protector, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion on the metal components of the transmission and hull in its immediate surroundings. Made of aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for navigation in salt and brackish waters, where the aggressive electrochemical potential can quickly degrade unprotected metal surfaces. Its plate geometry, with dimensions of 147 x 65 mm, guarantees an adequate sacrificial surface to cover the working area of the Arneson transmission, ensuring effective protection throughout the sailing season. Without this anode correctly installed and in good condition, galvanic corrosion can attack high-cost parts such as the axle, transmission housing or rudder, generating serious breakdowns and very expensive repairs.

When to replace this part?

An aluminum anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, has a completely whitish and porous surface, or has partially detached from its support. Unlike zinc anodes, aluminum anodes can visually appear more intact than they really are, so it is recommended that they be inspected and replaced preventively at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching or every 12 months. Replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to the Arneson transmission and adjacent metal elements of the propulsion system.
