ANODO HELICE VETUS KGF25 Ø38 (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
The VETUS KGF25 Ø38 propeller anode in zinc acts as sacrificial cathodic protection for the vessel's propeller and propulsion shaft, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal of the propeller and its associated components. This element works within the propulsion system, continuously exposed to salt or brackish water where the electrochemical processes are especially aggressive. Being a less noble metal than the steel or bronze of the propeller, the zinc of the anode preferentially corrodes, preserving the structural integrity of the propeller and shaft. If the anode is depleted without being replaced in time, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the propeller, propeller shaft and bushings, generating costly damage that can compromise the maneuverability of the boat.
When to replace this part?
Propeller anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season; When the anode has lost between 30% and 50% of its mass or has an irregular and severely eroded surface, it is time to change it before launching the boat again. In vessels that remain in the water continuously or in ports with high underwater electrical activity, the useful life of the anode can be considerably reduced, so a quarterly underwater inspection is recommended. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid propeller and shaft repairs in the dock, the cost of which far exceeds that of several anodes.
