Function and technical context

This propeller anode is specifically designed for Side-Power retractable side thrusters with a diameter of 19 mm (reference REC9446), whose propeller and shaft are exposed to sea or brackish water when the system is deployed. Its function is to provide active cathodic protection to the metal assembly of the propeller and shaft, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking the structural components of the propeller. In installations with an aluminum hull or in ports with high galvanic currents, the absence of an anode in good condition can lead to accelerated degradation of the bronze or aluminum of the propeller hub and blades, compromising the operability of the bow thruster or stern thruster and causing costly breakdowns in the retractable system.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost more than 50% of its volume or has an irregular and porous surface, it no longer offers effective protection and must be replaced immediately. The recommended practice by side thruster manufacturers is to inspect and replace the anodes at least once a season, or each time the boat is docked, regardless of the number of hours sailed. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft and propeller of the retractable Side-Power, repairs that can multiply the cost tenfold.
