Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for Varifold 3 and 4 blade propellers with Ø41 mm shaft diameter is the key protective element in the propulsion system of boats equipped with variable pitch folding propellers. Made of high-purity zinc, it acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair that is formed when different metals—bronze, stainless steel, aluminum—coexist submerged in salt or brackish water, attracting electrochemical corrosion to itself and thus preserving the hub, blades and shaft of the propeller. Without properly sized cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion progressively degrades the most expensive drivetrain components, compromising Varifold blade fit, shaft torque and ultimately the structural integrity of the propeller. This anode is specifically designed for the mounting geometry of Varifold 3 and 4 blade propellers with Ø41 mm hub, guaranteeing effective electrical contact and a sacrificial surface suitable for the season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode is exhausted is the appearance of pitting, surface erosion or reddish-orange discoloration on the hub or roots of the Varifold blades; When the anode has lost more than 50% of its mass, it has stopped protecting effectively. The standard maintenance guideline for propeller anodes in coastal navigation is annual replacement, coinciding with the seasonal beaching or each time the boat is taken out to dry for inspection of the hull. Replacing the anode preventively each season is the most economical measure to avoid replacing a Varifold propeller, the cost of which is significantly higher.
