Description

Function and technical context

Arneson transmission sacrificial anodes act as an electrochemical shield, attracting galvanic corrosion before it reaches the metal surfaces of the surface drive, shaft and stern structural components. Made of high-purity aluminum alloy, this anode is indicated for vessels that operate in salty and brackish waters, where galvanic corrosion is especially aggressive. Correct cathodic protection of an Arneson transmission is critical: without a functional anode, the noble metals of the transmission – structural bronzes, steels and aluminum – are exposed to an accelerated corrosion process that can compromise the mechanical integrity of the propulsion assembly. This large model is designed to provide a generous sacrificial surface, prolonging the effective protection interval even in high salinity or intensive navigation conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom of a depleted anode is the appearance of pitting, surface erosion or irregular coloring on the metal components of the Arneson transmission, a sign that the cathodic protection is no longer effective. As a general rule, sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their mass or when cracks and loss of adhesion to the support are seen. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most recommended practice by marine mechanics: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a surface transmission damaged by galvanic corrosion.
