Function and technical context

The Flex Fold aluminum sacrificial anode for Ø 69.5 mm shafts acts as active cathodic protection against galvanic corrosion, the main silent enemy of metal components submerged in salt or brackish water. Installed directly on the tail shaft, this anode oxidizes in a controlled and preferential manner, preserving more noble metals such as bronze, stainless steel or brass present in propellers, horns, flying buttresses and transmission accessories. The Flex Fold design of two articulated halves facilitates assembly and disassembly without the need to remove the propeller or disassemble the propulsion system, making it an especially practical solution for stranded inspections. The aluminum alloy used makes it ideal for vessels that operate in marine waters with medium-high salinity, where the electrochemical activity is more aggressive than in fresh water.

When to replace this anode?

An axle anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, as below that threshold its protective capacity decreases significantly and drive train components are exposed to electrolytic corrosion. The most common symptoms of a depleted or missing anode are visible pitting on the surface of the shaft, premature wear of the stern bearing, and corrosion at the roots of the propeller blades. As a preventive maintenance rule, it is recommended to inspect the anode at each annual beaching and always replace it at the beginning of each nautical season, regardless of its apparent condition; Changing the anode when grounded is incomparably cheaper than repairing a shaft or propeller damaged by galvanic corrosion.
