Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode with a diameter of 47 mm is designed to protect the metal elements of outboard motors and Sole propulsion groups through the principle of galvanic cathodic protection. It acts as a sacrificial metal: being composed of zinc, it is electrochemically more active than the aluminum or stainless steel of adjacent parts, so it corrodes first and preserves the structural components of the engine intact. Its correct installation is critical in salt or brackish water environments, where galvanic corrosion can deteriorate shafts, propellers, casings and blocks in a few seasons if there is no active sacrificial protection.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has completed its cycle is the loss of between 50% and 70% of its mass or the presence of a very irregular, whitish and porous surface. Unlike other components, the anode does not fail suddenly: when it is completely consumed, it stops protecting the surrounding metal parts and direct galvanic corrosion begins on the engine. It is recommended to check the condition of the anode at each beaching or at least once per nautical season, replacing it preventively even if it is not completely exhausted if the boat frequently navigates in salt waters; Delaying this replacement can lead to severe damage to much higher cost components.
