Description

Function and technical context

Zinc tailshaft anodes are the sacrificial element that protects the propulsion shaft from galvanic corrosion in saltwater or brackish marine environments. This Radice series hexagonal anode is specifically designed for shaft diameters between 70 and 100 mm, embracing the shaft through its hexagonal geometry to ensure solid electrical contact and stable fixation without interfering with rotation. Its function is to corrode in a controlled manner before the structural metal of the shaft, the stuffing box or other metal parts immersed in galvanic contact does so. Without effective cathodic protection, the stainless steel or bronze shaft can suffer from pitting, thinning and loss of structural integrity, with the real risk of shaft breakage while sailing.

When to replace this part?

The anodes should be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with the annual docking of the boat. The unequivocal sign that the anode must be replaced is that it has lost more than 50% of its mass: at that point its protection capacity is seriously compromised. If the anode appears completely consumed, grayish-white and friable, or if superficial pits are detected on the axis itself, replacement is urgent. Changing the anode preventively at each grounding, even if it is not completely exhausted, is the practice recommended by any professional shipyard: the cost of the anode is minimal compared to rectification or replacement of a shaft damaged by corrosion.
