Description

Function and technical context

Teardrop-shaped sacrificial anodes for welding are part of the galvanic protection system for metal hulls and submerged structures on vessels. Its mission is to polarize anodically with respect to the noble metals of the hull—steel, aluminum or bronze—so that it is the anode itself that is electrochemically corroded instead of the structure it protects. This type of zinc (Zn) anode is especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, where the electrochemical potential of zinc offers effective protection against galvanic corrosion. The teardrop geometry and flat welding base allow the anode to be fixed directly on the hull or on structural profiles, ensuring continuous metal contact and an optimal water-exposed surface for progressive culling. If the cathodic protection system fails or the anodes are depleted without being replaced in time, the hull and submerged metal components are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that a sacrificial anode needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is seriously compromised. The inspection of all zinc anodes must be carried out at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the beaching or dry work of the hull, and it is advisable to also inspect them mid-season on boats that remain in the water continuously. Replacing the anodes preventively, before they are completely used up, is the most economical measure to avoid damage due to galvanic corrosion to the hull, propellers, shafts and other submerged metal components that would involve very high-cost repairs.
