ANODO OVAL SOLDAR 4.5KG (AL)
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are the galvanic shield of any vessel: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect submerged metal surfaces—propellers, shafts, rudders, keels and metal hulls—from electrolytic corrosion generated by the potential difference between different metals in contact with water. This oval aluminum anode is specifically designed to be welded onto metal hull structures or submerged appendages, offering permanent fixation and optimal electrical conductivity without relying on additional screws or brackets. The aluminum alloy used makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, where cathodic protection must be more aggressive and continuous. If the anode runs out without being replaced in time, the noble metals of the boat begin to corrode rapidly, which can cause serious structural damage and costly repairs in the shipyard.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed approximately half of its volume or has a very irregular and disintegrated surface, it has reached the limit of its useful life. Sacrificial anodes must be checked at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced whenever they are consumed by more than 50%, regardless of the time elapsed, since in areas with high water conductivity or high galvanic currents, wear can be much faster than expected. Replacing the anode preventively during each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of shafts, propellers and hulls, the repair of which can far exceed the cost of several anodes.
