Description

Function and technical context

Zinc sacrificial anodes act as an electrochemical shield for the submerged metal parts of the vessel, attracting galvanic corrosion to themselves and preserving metal propellers, shafts, keels and hulls. This oval zinc anode is designed to be installed by direct welding on steel or cast iron surfaces, ensuring permanent and reliable electrical contact without risk of loosening due to vibration or marine current. Zinc is the ideal material for vessels operating in salt or brackish water, as it offers the appropriate electrochemical potential to protect the most common carbon steel alloys in naval structures. If the anode wears out completely without being replaced, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the noble parts of the boat, potentially causing perforations in the hull, deterioration of the tail shaft or irreversible damage to the propeller.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that a zinc anode needs replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode has a very irregular surface, is greatly reduced or has partially disappeared, it has stopped effectively protecting the structure. The professional recommendation is to inspect all sacrificial anodes at least once per nautical season, ideally at the annual beaching, and replace them whenever their wear exceeds half their volume. Acting preventively is much more economical than repairing a corroded axle or a hull damaged by uncontrolled galvanic corrosion.
