Description

Function and technical context

This oval magnesium anode for welding acts as sacrificial cathodic protection on hulls, rudders, flying buttresses and submerged metal structures of vessels sailing in fresh waters or with low salinity. As magnesium is a metal with a greater negative electrochemical potential than aluminum, steel or bronze, it preferentially corrodes, diverting towards itself the galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metallic components of the boat. Its oval format and its design for fixation by welding guarantee a solid and permanent electrical connection with the hull or protected structure, without risk of loosening or loss of electrical continuity. A depleted anode or the wrong material for the type of water exposes rudders, shafts, propellers and steel or aluminum surfaces to accelerated galvanic corrosion, with serious structural consequences.

When to replace this part?

Magnesium sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once per season or at each beaching; The professional rule is to replace them when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that level their protection capacity decreases drastically. Signs that the anode is exhausted include a completely smooth and darkened surface, a noticeable reduction in volume compared to the new state, or the appearance of corrosion pits on adjacent metals. Replacing the anode preventively at each seasonal grounding is the most economical way to avoid structural damage to the hull, shaft or propeller that can lead to very expensive repairs.
