Description

Function and technical context

This oval-shaped zinc anode with dimensions 250x90x50 mm is designed to be welded directly on the hull of the boat, acting as active cathodic protection against galvanic corrosion. Its function is to electrochemically sacrifice itself in place of the noble metals of the hull – steel, aluminum, bronze or cast iron – which, in contact with salt or brackish water, would be exposed to accelerated degradation. Being the least noble metal in the galvanic group, zinc absorbs the electrochemical attack, preserving the structural integrity of the hull and the submerged metal components. Welding fixation guarantees a continuous, low-resistance electrical connection, essential for cathodic protection to be effective throughout the entire navigation season.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at a minimum at the beginning and end of each season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass; a greater reduction compromises the protection of the helmet. Symptoms of exhaustion include a noticeably reduced surface area, visible pitting in the metal areas it should protect - steel keels, propellers or rudders - and, in advanced cases, the appearance of surface rust in areas close to the anode. The advice of specialists is to replace the anode preventively every season on boats that operate in salt water or with high conductivity, since a consumed anode means hull repairs whose cost far exceeds that of the part.
