Description

Function and technical context

This zinc sacrificial anode with an oval shape and dimensions 225x80 mm is designed to be welded directly on the hull or submerged metal structures of the vessel, acting as a cathodic protection element. Its function is to electrochemically sacrifice itself in place of the metal of the hull, propeller, rudder or other submerged components, absorbing the galvanic corrosion generated by the potential difference between dissimilar metals in contact with water. Zinc is the ideal material for vessels that operate in salty or salubrious waters, since it offers the electrochemical potential necessary to protect steels, aluminum and bronzes typical of the shell. Without active and correctly sized cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can seriously deteriorate the hull, propellers or shafts in just a few seasons, generating costly breakdowns and compromising the safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, ideally at each beaching or annual tune-up. The clearest sign that the anode has fulfilled its function is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since below that threshold its protective capacity drops drastically. If corrosion is observed in the core, pitting in the hull or submerged appendages, it is likely that the anode is exhausted or that the protected surface is not properly covered. It is recommended to replace the zinc anodes preventively at the beginning of each nautical season; This is one of the most economical and effective maintenance measures to avoid irreversible structural damage to the boat.
