ANODO OVAL SOLDAR 225X Ø70mm (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
This oval-shaped zinc anode, measuring 225 x Ø70 mm and designed to be welded directly on the hull or metal structure of the boat, acts as a sacrificial element in the cathodic protection system. Its function is to attract electrolytic corrosion generated by galvanic currents present in sea or brackish water, protecting itself instead of the noble metal surfaces of the hull, propeller, shafts or rudders. Without adequate cathodic protection, aluminum, bronze or stainless steel structures corrode rapidly, causing serious and irreversible damage that compromises both the structural integrity and safety of the vessel. Being made of zinc (ZN), it is particularly suitable for use in salt and brackish water, where the electrochemical potential of zinc offers optimal protection against galvanic corrosion.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that a zinc anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume or has an irregular and grainy surface, it should be replaced immediately. The general maintenance guideline for sacrificial anodes is inspection at each beaching and replacement at least once a season, although in areas with high electrolytic activity or vessels with electrical installations on board it may be necessary to check them more frequently. Replacing the anode before it is completely consumed is the most economical preventive measure against hull or shaft repairs that can involve very high costs in a naval workshop.
