ANODO OVAL SOLDAR 240X90mm (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
This zinc anode with an oval shape and dimensions 240x90 mm is designed to be welded directly on the hull, keel, rudder or any submerged metal structure of the boat, acting as a sacrificial anode in the cathodic protection system. Its function is to oxidize in a controlled manner instead of the noble metals of the hull - steel, aluminum, bronze or brass -, diverting the galvanic corrosion generated by the potential difference between different metals in contact with water. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can attack propellers, shafts, horns, bottom holes and structural hull welds, compromising both the integrity of the vessel and the safety of navigation. Zinc is the ideal material for vessels that operate in salty or brackish waters, where the electrochemical potential of the aggressive environment requires effective and proven cathodic protection.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, taking advantage of the annual beaching or any dry inspection of the vessel. The sign that the anode has reached its useful life is visible to the naked eye: when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass, it is essential to replace it before the protected metal structure is exposed. If incipient corrosion is detected on the shaft, propeller or hull surface around the anchor point, it means that the anode has been completely consumed and the cathodic protection is no longer effective; In that case, the replacement must be immediate. The advice from professionals in the sector is clear: renewing the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical investment to avoid high-cost structural repairs.
