Description

Function and technical context

This oval zinc anode with dimensions 200 × Ø70 mm is designed to be welded directly on the hull, keel, rudder or other submerged metal surfaces of the vessel, acting as a sacrificial electrode in the cathodic protection system. Its function is to concentrate on itself the electrochemical oxidation process that would otherwise attack the noble metals of the structure—aluminum, bronze, stainless steel—preserving its integrity. The zinc alloy makes it especially suitable for salt water and brackish water, environments in which the electrolytic potential is more aggressive. Without active and correctly sized cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can compromise propellers, shafts, aluminum hulls and stern fittings within just a few sailing seasons.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, ideally at each beaching, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have deep surface cracks, or their surface appears smooth and vitrified—a sign of passivation that nullifies their protective capacity. For boats that remain in the water all year round or that frequent marinas with a high density of eddy currents, a semi-annual inspection is essential. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to structural elements of much higher cost.
