ANODO OVAL SOLDAR 110X63mm (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
This oval zinc anode measuring 110x63 mm is designed to be welded directly on the hull, keel, rudder or other submerged metal structures of the boat, acting as a sacrificial electrode in the cathodic protection system. Its function is to attract galvanic corrosion generated by the difference in electrical potential between different metals in contact with salt or brackish water, protecting them from oxidation and electrolysis. Zinc being a more electronegative metal than steel, aluminum or bronze, it degrades in a controlled manner instead of the structural components of the boat. Without adequate cathodic protection, propellers, shafts, exhaust elbows, engine casings and metal hulls can suffer pitting and accelerated deterioration that compromises the integrity of the vessel.
When to replace this part?
Zinc anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold their protective capacity decreases drastically. Signs that the anode has exhausted its useful life include a visible reduction in volume, a very uneven and porous surface, or the appearance of corrosion on adjacent metal parts that it should be protecting. As a precautionary rule, many skippers and yards recommend replacing all zinc anodes at each annual beaching, regardless of their apparent condition, to ensure continuous protection throughout the season without the risk of being left unprotected at sea.
