Function and technical context

The smooth zinc bars of Ø 16 mm and length 400 mm are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed on hulls, tail shafts, rudders and submerged metal structures of boats. They act as sacrificial anodes, attracting electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack the vessel's noble metals such as bronze, stainless steel or aluminum. As zinc is an electrochemically active metal, it preferentially oxidizes, protecting the structural integrity of the entire propulsion system and submerged appendages. Its smooth bar format makes it easy to cut and machine to size according to the needs of each nautical installation.

When to replace this part?

It is recommended to inspect the zinc anodes at least once per nautical season or every time the boat goes to the dock. The unequivocal sign that they must be replaced is when they have lost between 50% and 60% of their mass, presenting a very irregular, porous or clearly diminished surface. Postponing the replacement of worn anodes can lead to severe galvanic corrosion on propeller shafts, horns, rudders and hull hardware, repairs that more than multiply the cost of a simple new anode.
