Function and technical context

The zinc plate anode acts as passive cathodic protection for the hull and submerged metal elements of the vessel, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion from damaging more noble surfaces such as aluminum, stainless steel or bronze. Zinc being a metal with a greater electronegative potential, it attracts the parasitic current generated by the potential difference between different metals in contact with salt or brackish water, consuming itself before the critical parts of the propulsion assembly or the hull deteriorate. Without adequate cathodic protection, aluminum propellers, shafts, keels, engine legs and hulls can suffer accelerated corrosion in a matter of weeks, leading to high-cost structural repairs. This zinc plate anode reference REC8130 is designed to be installed directly on flat hull or leg surfaces, offering uniform protection in the area of ​​maximum exposure to the marine environment.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% to 60% of their mass, without waiting for them to be completely used up, since an excessively consumed anode no longer offers effective protection and exposes metal components to galvanic corrosion. The clearest symptoms that the protection system has failed are the appearance of pitting or visible erosion on propellers, shafts or aluminum surfaces of the leg, as well as abnormally rapid degradation of the anode itself which may indicate stray currents at the anchor or mooring. The professional recommendation is to replace all the zinc anodes on the boat at the same time, taking advantage of the annual beaching, to guarantee homogeneous protection and avoid costly structural repairs during the season.
