Description

Function and technical context

This screwable zinc anode measuring 300 x 150 x 2 mm is part of the boat's passive cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial electrode to protect the structural metals of the hull, keels, propellers and other submerged surfaces against galvanic corrosion. Zinc, being a more electropositive metal, preferentially oxidizes when a galvanic cell is formed in water, consuming itself to preserve intact the highest value metal components such as bronzes, stainless steels and aluminum alloys. Its flat screw-on format facilitates direct installation on hull surfaces or other submerged metal structures, guaranteeing stable electrical contact and uniform protective coverage over a large surface. Without active and correctly sized cathodic protection, electrolytic corrosion can rapidly and silently deteriorate critical elements of the vessel, generating high-cost repairs or even compromising the structural integrity of the hull.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be visually inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season: when the anode has lost approximately half of its mass or has an irregular, heavily eroded surface, it is essential to replace it before it stops offering effective protection. A spent anode is easily identifiable because it has practically disappeared, has deep cracks or has become detached from the attachment point; At that time the metals of the hull are exposed to galvanic corrosion without protection. The professional recommendation is to replace them preventively every season, regardless of their apparent condition, to avoid silent breakdowns in submerged structural or mechanical elements that would involve high-cost repairs in the dock.
